Onkyo TX-NR727 3D Ready A/V Receiver - 7.2 Channel

TX-NR 727 Great Receiver at this price range.
Bought this after trying the Sony STR-DN1040 and Denon AVR-E400. The sound quality of the Onkyo is the best. The Sony could be ignored. It has poor sound quality and poor user interface. Impression is that Sony don't have an engineer with audiophile background. Compared to the Denon E400, (both calibrated with Audyssey), it sounds noticeable more detail and open for music. When playing blu-ray movie, the difference is day and night. The sound is a lot more enveloping and powerful for action scenes. I had a Yamaha HTR5860 before. Going to the Denon was a big jump in sound quality. However, going from the Denon to this Onkyo resulted in even bigger improvement. This receiver is also more stable than the Denon. The Denon would lock up once in a while requiring powering off and on again.

The downside of this receiver is that the user interface is a bit complicated and the remote buttons are not easy to press. It is a universal control though. The Denon's remote...

Good intentions, but terrible product integration
We bought an Onkyo TX-NR 727 to upgrade and simplify our existing setup.

We use a PS3, a Wii and an Xbox 360 for gaming, a Roku and an AppleTV for streaming (video and music), and a GoogleTV Blu-Ray for DVDs/BDs, and for music streaming. We had been using a combination of a 15-year-old analog stereo amplifier driving a pair of tower speakers (for the Roku and Apple TV), and a 10-year-old 5.1 receiver (for DVDs and games). Video signals went to our TV, either directly or through an HDMI switch.

The high-level specifications for the Onkyo TX-NR 727 seemed like a perfect match for our situation. Enough HDMI inputs to handle our existing devices with some room to grow, a component input for the Wii, and most importantly 2 amplified zones which would let it replace both our existing amplifiers. This would replace 4 remotes (TV, HDMI switch, amplifier, receiver) with a single one, and would use HDMI audio for all our HDMI devices. We were even planning to use some of...

Ready For My 4K Future! Better Than My Old Pioneer.
I used this to upgrade from a Pioneer VSX-1020-K and I like it better in just about every way.

First and most importantly, the audio quality. CNET called my old receiver "excellent" but the Onkyo has it noticeably beat. The default equalization (which I left alone) made the reference scenes I watched feel more real; like the characters were more in the room with you. The THX Select2 certification is no joke.

Of course, part of the audio advantage is surely due to the excellent automatic calibration via the included microphone. My old receiver's didn't work as well and I had to adjust the rear speaker levels, but the Onkyo was spot on, without needing additional adjustment, even guiding me through setting up the subwoofer volume in real time! They made it easy!

I also appreciated that the Onkyo TX-NR727 had built-in Bluetooth and Wifi (which required expensive extra accessories with my old receiver)! It's a bit weird that the Onkyo doesn't support...
