Mario Party: Island Tour

Boards are too tiny to enjoy.
I am disappointed that I bought this as a download from the eshop, as after only one night, I would probably sell the game if possible. The last Wii game had no change in game rules from board to board, so I was glad to hear that this game would feature 7 boards, each with its own rules. First off, unless you have plenty of friends with a 3DS, consider this to have 6 boards, as the 7th requires at least 3 human players. My wife and I played through 5 of the 6 we could play, then she said she won't play it again, just 2 hours after I bought it. We used to play the old games for weeks! The rules for the boards ARE varied and generally good, however no board has classic Mario Party rules. You won't be collecting coins and stars and there are no bonus stars at the end of the round. These boards are mostly about getting to the finish line first, that's it. Obstacles and how you get there change, BUT the game has been shortened for handheld play to the point that it all seems more...

worst mario party game ever
i am a huge fan of all mario party games for any platform, whether ds, wii, or game cube. i had high hopes for this game since it is for the new 3DS and i thought that it would blow all the other mario party games away. It did not. In fact, it fell behind as one of the worst mario party games i have ever played. The normal DS game for Mario Party is 10X better than this one. The only thing good about it is the 3D modes. You can not play all of the game boards, namely the last one where you need to have 3-4 actual players and not COMs. The boardgames last no more than 30-40 minutes and go by faster than a mario kart race on rainbow road. Most of the games are the same as past generation minigames, but with a litle twist, but too little to actually enjoy. Some minigames require the movement of the DS itself, and that is where the annoyance kicks in. The balance usually always go off and you end up turning your whole body in circles to move your screen to the right direction. there are...

Short, unsatisfying, and ultimately disappointing.
I'm a pretty big fan of Mario Party. I own every game in the series, and this is easily the worst one. It's such a shame. The 3DS is easily one of my favorite consoles of all time, so I had pretty high hopes for this installment, but their attempt to reinvent the series in the last couple of iterations is saddening.

Here are my main complaints:

- Nontraditional, linear boards: They did away with the classic coins-and-stars gameplay entirely in favor of gimmicks like races and card-based games.
- Short boards: They vary in length, but there's at least one you can win in three turns.
- Overly luck-based: I know, it's Mario Party -- luck is always an element. But there is WAY too much reliance on luck in this installment, for boards and minigames alike. Even some minigames that seem skill-based are more luck-reliant (I'm citing the minigame Stretch Run here -- the strength of the rubber band changes each time you play). Strategy in boards is either...
