What is this game exactly? read on and I will explain..
Okay, before the questions start pouring in, and the reviews for what people expected start skewing these reviews all over the place, allow me to make some clarifications. This is a title called NES Remix. This contains small "challenges" that cover some of Nintendo's titles that came out on the NES. This disc contains exactly what one would get if they went on the WiiU eShop and purchased NES Remix I and II. These do not contains the full versions of the titles represented on the discs (Super Mario Bros 3, Metroid, Pinball, Kirby's Adventure to name a few). With the downloads of both titles from the eShop, one would obtain a copy of Super Luigi Bros, which is basically Super Mario Bros in reverse; going right to left, as opposed to left to right.
The game consists of small challenges contained within fractions or tidbits of the game. For example, Stomp on 10 Koopa shells in Super Mario Bros, or guide Mario or Kirby to get a certain score in some games. Some of the...
Great hit of nostalgia
I grew up on these games. I do own a functional NES with many of the titles featured on this game, but to be honest as a wife and working mother of two I really don't have a huge time budget to spend, as much as I would like to spend it on gaming. I manage to play some Smash Bros and some casual games with the kids here and there, but I haven't managed to play anything more in-depth than that in a while.
Some of these challenges are way simple, and others are a bit maddening. Most can be solved in just a few minutes of repeated attempts. As the price suggests, there isn't a ton of content in this game. In 24 hours of owning the game, my husband and I cleared maybe 40% of the challenges. It's been a lot of fun though and it's exciting to know we'll finish an entire game for a change.
Pros:
*All ages can pick up and play
*Remix levels can be pretty awesome
*Low difficulty
*Just hard enough at times to keep you hooked
*Retro factor is...
Old School with a New Twist
I was avoiding this on the e-Shop because I new it was coming out for both the Wii U and the 3DS so naturally I bought both. I haven't played the 3DS version but it's pretty much the same as the WII U version with the exception of it being called Ultimate NES Remix. So it's negligible .
I might be biased for giving this 5 stars because it's the era that I grew up in. It's where I started gaming, from what I can remember anyways, and it's where the hobby really latched onto me. Experiencing these games in this format is rewarding and fresh. Doing challenges for specific levels has been a whole lot of fun. Going through the challenges for SMB 1-3 and saying out loud "I still remember it!" is awesome and I remember why I love this hobby so much. It's great getting away from modern gaming and going back to this shows how much the industry has changed. It might be nostalgia hitting me but I find myself playing this more than the other titles I'm playing as well...
